According to TSN.ua: A study by researchers from the University of Montreal examined ancient Maya water reservoirs in Guatemala and discovered they were contaminated with mercury, leading to serious health issues. The Maya, who possessed water purification technologies, left behind several reservoirs. One of these, known as Aguada 2, was equipped with a natural filtration system. Despite these advanced methods, the study found that three reservoirs in the city of Ucanal, which was home to up to 11,000 people, contained dangerously high levels of mercury. The Maya civilization was one of the most advanced in the pre-Columbian Americas, making this environmental oversight particularly significant.

Key Findings of the Study

A critical finding was that mercury levels in the water increased by over 300 percent between 830 and 950 CE. This contamination was likely linked to the Maya's use of cinnabar, a mercury-based pigment used to decorate buildings and bodies during burials. Lead researcher Jean Tremblay noted that the Maya people would have had no way of knowing about the toxicity of this substance. This research highlights how ancient environmental practices can have direct parallels to modern pollution challenges.
