An Appeal to Celebrate Kolodiy

According to Novyny.live: There is a growing call for Ukrainians to set aside the celebration of Maslenitsa and instead observe the authentic spring festival of Kolodiy, traditionally held on February 21-22. Karina Oliynyk, director of the 'Mamayeva Sloboda' living history museum, has urged this shift, emphasizing that Kolodiy holds deep roots in Ukrainian culture, unlike the later Maslenitsa tradition. This push is part of a broader cultural movement to reclaim indigenous traditions.

According to Oliynyk, Kolodiy is a festival whose origins trace back to the ancient Trypillian culture.

"This holiday is called Kolodiy. Its roots run very deep, likely to the Trypillian culture, because it is a festival of lineage continuation, the continuation of the Ukrainian family and our people," she noted.
The central dish of Kolodiy is the varenyk (dumpling), not the pancake, which is a key distinction from Maslenitsa. 'The *kolodka* (a wooden block) is a symbol of the masculine principle. To be frank, it is a phallic symbol. And our traditional dish is varenyky,' added the museum director.

Reviving Traditions

It is noteworthy that in 2009, the 'Mamayeva Sloboda' museum began reviving the tradition of celebrating Kolodiy with varenyky, marking a significant step in preserving Ukrainian customs. Kolodiy week is also known as 'Babsky' (Women's Week), highlighting its unique place in the Ukrainian festive calendar.

Thus, Ukrainians have the opportunity to celebrate Kolodiy, reconnecting with their traditions and culture, which helps preserve national identity. The call to observe Kolodiy instead of Maslenitsa reflects increasing attention to Ukrainian traditions and cultural heritage. In a time when national identity is a crucial component of public life, such initiatives can help revive traditions that were forgotten or replaced due to external influences. Supporting and popularizing holidays like Kolodiy can be an important step in consolidating Ukrainian society around its cultural roots.
