FSB-Linked Hit Squads Targeting Ukrainian Journalist Dmytro Gordon Dismantled in Joint Ukraine-Moldova Operation.
Public Figures in Ukraine Under Threat
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian and Moldovan law enforcement have disrupted a plot, allegedly directed by Russian intelligence, to assassinate several public figures, including prominent Ukrainian journalist Dmytro Gordon. In June 2025, Vasyl Malyuk, head of Ukraine's Security Service (SBU), revealed details of the planned attack on Gordon. According to intelligence, Russian operatives offered a bounty of $400,000 for the journalist's murder. This incident highlights the persistent and direct threats faced by Ukrainian media figures since Russia's full-scale invasion.
Authorities have detained four FSB-linked agent-combat groups involved in the conspiracy. A 36-year-old Russian agent was reportedly tasked with orchestrating the assassination attempt. Ivan Vyhivskyi, head of Ukraine's National Police, stated that the groups were planning at least nine murders. The bounties varied, with one journalist targeted for $100,000 and another for $300,000.
Operation 'Enigma 2.0'
On February 20, 2025, details emerged of 'Operation Enigma 2.0,' which led to the arrest of 10 suspects. Law enforcement sources confirmed that one of the intended targets was the well-known Ukrainian journalist and blogger Dmytro Gordon. Andrii Yusov, deputy head of the Coordination Headquarters for the Treatment of Prisoners of War, was also named among the potential victims on the list.
Ivan Vyhivskyi clarified that 'the sums for the contract killings ranged from $25,000 to hundreds of thousands of dollars.' This situation has caused deep concern within Ukraine's journalistic community and underscores the escalating dangers for public figures in the country.
This operation demonstrates the intensifying activity of Russian intelligence services on Ukrainian soil and their intent to physically eliminate opponents. The arrests highlight the efforts of Ukrainian law enforcement to counter these threats. Amidst the ongoing war and heightened political tension in Ukraine, the safety of journalists and other public figures has become a critically important issue for society.
