Museum Founder Seeks to Buy Dismantled Bulgakov Monument.
A Bid to Acquire the Bulgakov Monument
According to Espreso.tv: Victor Bazhan, the founder of a museum, intends to purchase the monument to Mikhail Bulgakov in order to safeguard his artistic legacy. This move comes after the statue was taken down on June 4, 2025, during a wave of decommunization efforts. Notably, back in May 2023, the Museum of the History of Kyiv had already updated a memorial plaque dedicated to the celebrated writer.
The removal of the Bulgakov monument has sparked debate among the public and cultural figures. On July 12, 2025, the project 'Decolonization.Ukraine' formally requested Oleksandr Alferov to dismantle the statue, which led to its removal. Bazhan has now declared his intention to buy the monument, stating:
“I plan to purchase the monument to preserve it for future generations.” - Victor Bazhan
The Importance of Cultural Heritage
Bazhan’s plan reflects a broader effort to protect the cultural heritage associated with Mikhail Bulgakov for generations to come. This situation brings up crucial issues about preserving historical memory and the role of art in society. Amid ongoing cultural and political shifts in Ukraine, such initiatives could play a key part in shaping national identity and supporting cultural heritage.
Preserving monuments and memorials is becoming critically important for understanding a country’s history and culture, as well as for fostering dialogue between different generations and cultural traditions.
