Zelensky named the number of churches destroyed by the Russians.
The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, stated that Russian occupiers in Ukraine have killed 50 priests and destroyed about 700 churches. He shared this information in an interview with the Christian media CBN News.
According to the president, the Russians show no mercy towards Ukrainian churches and treat them the same way they treat schools. They damage churches to leave no trace. Many priests have been taken captive or killed. President Zelensky emphasized that priests have been tortured for their ties to Patriarch Kirill and the Russian Church. There is evidence of how priests were tortured before their executions.
He also reported that Russian occupiers are attacking churches, destroying them with bombs and rockets, and setting them on fire.
The President emphasized that Ukraine does not recognize temporarily occupied territories as Russian from a legal standpoint.
Attacks on churches and temples
One of the churches that suffered from the shelling of Russian occupiers is the church of the Moscow church in Ukraine. As a result of the shelling, the roof of the church caught fire, leading to the destruction of the church's cover, dome, and interior decoration.
In the occupied territory of the Zaporizhzhia region, the Russian authorities have banned religious services in the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church. This decision was justified by the presence of explosive materials and weapons in church buildings, as well as violations of Russian Federation legislation on religious and public organizations.
