Ukraine Withdraws from CIS Border Agreement Under Presidential Decree.
Ukraine's Withdrawal from the CIS Agreement
According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has signed a decree formally withdrawing Ukraine from the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) agreement concerning the protection of state borders and maritime economic zones. This move represents a significant shift in Ukraine's foreign policy and its relations with other CIS member states. This decision is part of Ukraine's ongoing effort to redefine its international partnerships following Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022.
The agreement from which Ukraine is withdrawing was originally signed in Kyiv on March 20, 1992. This document established a framework for regulating the protection of state borders and exclusive economic zones among the participating nations. In accordance with the new decree, Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been instructed to formally notify the depositary of the agreement of this decision.
A Shift in Ukraine's Foreign Policy
Withdrawing from this pact signals a change in Ukraine's approach to cooperation with the CIS on matters of border security and regional safety.
This step can be viewed as part of a broader Ukrainian strategy aimed at strengthening national security and sovereignty amid heightened tensions with Russia and other CIS countries. The exit from this agreement underscores Ukraine's pursuit of new alliances and cooperative frameworks within international politics, which is likely to influence its future relations with neighboring states.
