Zelensky posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine to scout Oleksiy Slyushenko.
The title of Hero of Ukraine has been awarded to Oleksiy Slyushenko
President Volodymyr Zelensky reviewed 22 petitions regarding the posthumous awarding of the title of Hero of Ukraine. Of these, only one serviceman received this highest state award. The responses were published on the electronic petition website on November 26-27. This was reported by Mirror of the Week.
The title of Hero of Ukraine was awarded to Oleksiy Slyushenko, a world champion in powerlifting, who voluntarily went to the front in the first days of the full-scale invasion and became a scout.
Slyushenko was killed in June 2023 on the island of Bilohrudiv in the Kherson region during attempts by Russians to displace the Armed Forces of Ukraine from the Dnipro islands. His heroism was particularly evident on October 5, 2022, when he was the first in Mykolaiv region to destroy an enemy 'Shahed' drone, saving many civilian lives.
In addition, 18 individuals were posthumously awarded the Order of 'For Courage' of the III degree, one person received the Order of Daniel of Galicia, as well as the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky III degree. The President also instructed Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal to consider the possibility of awarding the title of Hero of Ukraine to two more people.
As noted, despite significant support for the petitions, their effectiveness depends on careful analysis and compliance of the awards with legislative norms. In total, since the beginning of the invasion of Russia, the title of Hero of Ukraine has been awarded to 331 individuals, of whom 188 were posthumously awarded.
It is worth noting that on Defender's Day of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelensky posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine to pilot Andriy Pilshchikov, codename Juice. The corresponding decree was published on the official website of the head of state. Juice was posthumously awarded the Order of 'Golden Star'.
