Zelenskyy Urges Europe to Build a 3-Million-Strong Army in Response to Russian Military Buildup.
Ukrainian President's Statement
According to UATV: On January 20, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called for a unified European military force of at least 3 million personnel. He framed this as a necessary response to Russia's plans to expand its own military to 2.5 million troops by 2030. The Ukrainian leader stressed the critical importance of Europe forming a powerful, independent army, stating,
"the army in Europe ... must be 3 million."This appeal comes as European security debates intensify following Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine.
Zelenskyy first issued this call to European leaders last year. He emphasized that Europe is a distinct continent that requires its own robust, unified defense force. The president noted that Ukraine possesses direct combat experience and is prepared to share its military technologies with partners.
"This is not only about an army, it is also about an exchange of technologies,"he underscored.
The Imperative for Military Cooperation
Russia's declared plans to field such a large military demand a serious and proportional response from European nations, Zelenskyy argued. He highlighted the urgent need for a consolidated effort to ensure regional security.
The Ukrainian president's statement underscores the growing relevance of military collaboration among European countries amid the escalating threat from Russia. Given the ongoing conflict and Moscow's military ambitions, Zelenskyy's appeal may prompt European states to accelerate efforts to bolster their collective defense capabilities.
Significantly, Ukraine is offering not just a numerical target but also valuable battlefield experience and technology, which could substantially enhance the effectiveness of any joint European security initiative.
