Why Ukraine insists on strong Western security guarantees

According to TSN.ua: In an interview with the French newspaper Le Monde, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed that Ukraine needs robust security guarantees from the West. He suggested that such guarantees could involve the transfer of nuclear weapons to Ukraine. Zelenskyy also highlighted the importance of preserving the Donbas region, insisting that Ukraine’s independence and the freedom of choice for its people must be maintained.

According to Zelenskyy, the United States has offered security guarantees in exchange for Ukraine withdrawing from Donbas. However, he countered that 'our fortifications are our security guarantees,' reflecting Ukraine’s determination to ensure its own safety regardless of external conditions. He also pointed out the difficulties Ukraine faces in convincing new NATO members to help fund American weapons and equipment.

“We must preserve our independence, freedom of choice, and our state. That will be the foundation of a just peace.” — Volodymyr Zelenskyy

These remarks underscore the Ukrainian leadership’s firm stance on sovereignty and territorial integrity amid ongoing challenges. At the same time, Keith Kellogg has criticized the current structure of NATO, which could complicate further discussions on Ukraine’s security.

Ukraine’s diplomatic push

President Zelenskyy’s statements signal an intensification of Ukraine’s diplomatic efforts to secure safety and support from Western partners. His clear position on territorial integrity and independence highlights Ukraine’s drive to protect its national interests in a region of growing tension. Meanwhile, the criticism of NATO’s structure points to existing hurdles in building an effective collective security system, potentially shaping future talks and security strategies for Ukraine.
