Zelensky announced the order of 27 Patriots: why Ukraine is asking for systems in Europe.
According to inkorr.com: The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, announced that Ukraine intends to order 27 Patriot surface-to-air missile systems (SAM) from the United States to enhance the protection of its airspace. While work on the manufacture of these systems is ongoing in the U.S., Kyiv is offering European countries to lend their Patriots. According to Zelensky, the Ukrainian side is making efforts together with partners to protect against potential Russian air threats, but the process is slow. Some countries, including the United Kingdom, are currently not ready to send fighter jets for patrolling Ukrainian skies.
Zelensky confirmed that Ukraine intends to order 27 units of Patriot air defense systems from the American manufacturer. While this order is being fulfilled, the possibility of 'borrowing' similar air defense systems from European countries is being considered. According to the president, the issue of introducing European troops into Ukrainian territory requires caution, as excessive pressure on partners may lead to negative consequences.
In December 2021, Volodymyr Zelensky already announced the intention to order 27 Patriot surface-to-air missile systems from the U.S. to strengthen the country's defense capability. As the production process of the mentioned systems in the U.S. is progressing slowly, Ukraine is considering the possibility of receiving these complexes from European partners as temporary protection. The president also emphasized the importance of avoiding excessive pressure on allies in this matter to prevent negative consequences.
This initiative reflects Ukraine's efforts to strengthen its air defense against the backdrop of increasing threats from Russia. At the same time, the Ukrainian government is actively negotiating with Western partners, hoping for quicker deliveries of necessary military equipment to ensure national security.
