Ukraine Ready for Deal, Questions Russia's Intent as Talks Stall, Says Zelenskyy.
Ukrainian President Voices Concern Over Stalled Negotiations
According to UATV: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed concern about the stalling of negotiations with Russia, which are taking place in Geneva. He stated that the Ukrainian delegation has been tasked with making progress in the discussions, despite the negative impact of the return of Vladimir Medinsky, an aide to the Russian president, to the Russian delegation. Zelenskyy noted that the talks concern Moscow's apparent lack of readiness for compromise.
On February 18, while commenting to journalists, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine does not need war. He emphasized that the country always acts in a reciprocal manner and is prepared to move swiftly toward a worthy agreement to end the war.
“The only question is for the Russians: what do they want?”– the president added. These words underscore Ukraine's desire for peace and its readiness to engage in dialogue. The talks are a critical diplomatic channel for de-escalating the ongoing conflict.
Stance of the Russian Delegation
On the other side, Sergey Lavrov, head of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, has stated that the goals of the special military operation remain unchanged and are not subject to any compromise. This declaration indicates that the Russian side's position remains rigid, complicating the potential for progress in the negotiations.
Key figures in the Russian delegation also include General Valery Gerasimov, Chief of the Russian General Staff, and Andrey Kartapolov, head of the State Duma's defense committee. The Geneva negotiations continue to be closely monitored by the international community, including the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) and other expert organizations, which analyze the situation and provide forecasts regarding further developments.
Thus, the situation surrounding the negotiations between Ukraine and Russia remains complex, with both sides holding divergent views on the possibility of compromise. These circumstances highlight the importance of continuing dialogue with the aim of achieving peace in the region. As the talks continue, the international community remains watchful, hoping for a path to stability and peace for Ukraine and the surrounding territories.
