Trump may negotiate a conversation between Zelensky and Putin: the first in five years.
According to ТСН: Negotiations between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelensky may open the way for a phone conversation between the Ukrainian leader and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
A source providing information to Fox News Digital notes that the meeting at Mar-a-Lago was an important step in Trump's peace initiatives. One source told the publication that organizing direct communication between Zelensky and Putin would be a 'diplomatic victory' for the American president.
'If Putin joined the phone call on Sunday, it would be the biggest achievement in preparing for peace negotiations and the first real step in the peace process,' said an anonymous source for Fox News Digital.
Trump, according to sources, is likely the 'most successful mediator' as Putin and Zelensky 'emotionally understand each other.' Before the meeting with Trump, it has been reported that Zelensky may have felt some anxiety.
'Zelensky usually gets very nervous before such meetings with President Trump. He focuses for a long time and prepares notes provided by the Department of International Policy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs,' the source noted.
It is worth noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin has not communicated with Zelensky since July 2020. During this time, the Ukrainian leader has attempted to restore contact, but their efforts have been fruitless. An anonymous source indicated that there were potential opportunities for negotiations in August and September 2024, but they vanished after the start of the Kursk operation by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The last direct contact between the leaders occurred during the Ukrainian operation against Russian mercenaries of 'Wagner' in Belarus when Kyiv attempted to extradite them. However, Minsk handed them over to Russia.
'The last call between Zelensky and Putin occurred when Ukraine was attempting to capture a group of Russian Wagner fighters. The operation failed,' said the source, noting that even before the complete cessation of communication between the leaders, their relations had been tense.
'Up to that point in 2020, conversations between Zelensky and Putin had never been friendly; there was always tension between them. During negotiations, Putin was always silent, while Zelensky tried to establish understanding. When Putin was silent, Zelensky always asked, 'What do you think, Vladimir Vladimirovich?' but Putin was never talkative,' the source indicated.
Fox News Digital reached out for comments to the Kremlin and the Office of the President of Ukraine but has not yet received a response.
It is reminded that on December 28, the President of Ukraine met with Donald Trump in Florida. Before this meeting, Trump had a phone conversation with Vladimir Putin, which he described as 'very good' and 'productive.'
Zelensky also noted that during negotiations with Trump, a peace plan with 20 points was agreed upon by 90%, and security guarantees were agreed upon by 100%. He emphasized the importance of security guarantees for ensuring lasting peace.
The situation regarding possible negotiations between Zelensky and Putin underscores the complexity of diplomatic relations amid an ongoing conflict. The recent contacts between the leaders and U.S. initiatives point to attempts to find a peaceful solution, however, real progress remains in question. What steps the mentioned leaders will take next depends on the developments in the international arena and the willingness of the parties to engage in dialogue.
