A Century of Defiance: Chernobyl Resident Who Returned After the Blast Marks 100th Birthday

According to Novyny.live: Maria Ulyanivna Chalyi, who remained to live in the radiation-contaminated village of Kupovate after the 1986 Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant disaster, will celebrate her 100th birthday in the Exclusion Zone on February 2, 2024. Born in 1926, Maria's daughter was born 74 years ago. Following the explosion at the Chornobyl NPP on April 26, 1986, her daughter arrived at her mother's home on April 29, but they were evacuated from Kupovate on May 4, 1986.

Despite the difficult circumstances, Maria Chala returned to Kupovate in June of that same year. She continued to live within the Exclusion Zone, disregarding the hazardous conditions. Her resilience has been tested recently; in late January 2024, she faced power outages, with no electricity on January 27 and again from the 8th to the 17th of the month. The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone remains one of the most radioactively contaminated areas on Earth, making sustained habitation there extraordinary.

Strength of Spirit and Endurance

Maria Chala's daughter, also named Maria, noted that her mother worked hard in forestry for many years and was very active. She emphasized that it is now extremely difficult to procure firewood, which is crucial for survival in the Exclusion Zone. Despite her advanced age, Maria Chala has not suffered from serious illnesses, a point highlighted by Pavlo Smovzh, underscoring her toughness and vitality.

This centenarian has become a symbol of endurance and strength of spirit for many who continue to live in conditions deemed unfit for human life. The celebration of Maria Ulyanivna Chalyi's 100th birthday on February 2, 2024, will draw attention to the history of the Exclusion Zone's residents and their unbreakable desire to live on their native land despite all challenges.

The event is significant not only for Maria Chala and her family but for the entire community that remains within the Exclusion Zone. It highlights the longevity and resilience of human lives in the shadow of a catastrophe that altered the fate of thousands. This birthday celebration serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of remembering both history and the people who, against all odds, continue to live on their land.
