Geneva Talks Between Ukraine and Russia: A Potential Breakthrough in Stalled Negotiations.
New Phases in Geneva Negotiations
According to TSN.ua: A meeting between Ukrainian and Russian representatives took place in Geneva on February 18, an event with the potential to significantly impact the stalled peace process. Head of the Ukrainian President's Office, Kyrylo Budanov, described the current negotiation phase as one of 'cautious optimism'. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also confirmed that Ukraine, the United States, and Russia are preparing for new talks in a trilateral format. These discussions occur against the backdrop of a protracted conflict where any progress is critical for regional stability.
The Meeting's Significance
Andriy Veselovsky, who served as Ukraine's Permanent Representative to the EU from 2008 to 2010, emphasized the importance of this encounter. He noted that
“this happens often in negotiations, and generally, to a large extent, this is the kind of event that can shift a stalled negotiation process from a deadlock”— Andriy Veselovsky.
However, Veselovsky also stressed that 'the public aspect of such meetings does not always reflect the real substance of the talks'. In his view, during this dialogue, which included David Arakhamia, participants might detect a certain weakness or error from the opposing side. This could then be either documented and countered, or leveraged in future stages of negotiation. Consequently, the Geneva meeting represents a crucial step in continuing the dialogue between the parties.
The Geneva meeting could become a pivotal moment in reviving the negotiation process between Ukraine and Russia, particularly within the framework of trilateral cooperation involving the U.S. The outcomes may determine the future trajectory of relations between the countries, making it essential to monitor subsequent steps and reactions from both sides.
