A 105-day, 12-hour daily commute to the hospital: An 82-year-old man's final journey to see his dying wife.
Devotion and Heartbreak
According to TSN.ua: For 105 days straight, 82-year-old farmer Chen A-chong made a grueling 12-hour round trip to the hospital just to spend a precious 30 minutes with his wife, Xue, who was battling severe pneumonia. He covered this distance every single day, driven by love and loyalty. Tragically, Xue, aged 76, passed away on March 13.
Her health had been fragile since suffering a stroke a year earlier, which complicated her recovery. Chen spent over 100,000 yuan (roughly 14,000 USD) on her treatment, and to help cover the mounting medical bills, the couple's son sold his own home. Recognizing the emotional importance of these visits, the hospital staff made special accommodations to allow Chen more time by his wife's side.
Moved by his story, strangers donated more than 140,000 yuan to support the family. Reflecting on his loss, Chen shared his grief in these words:
“Our bond in this life has ended, but I am not ready to accept it.” — Chen A-chong
He added, “I feel like my heart is being torn apart. The pain is unbearable. But there was nothing else I could do.”
Chen says he will continue to visit his wife's grave: “Whenever I have time, I will go to her grave. She was the best wife in the world.”
The Power of Support
This story is a powerful testament to enduring love and unwavering commitment that defined their life together.
Beyond the personal tragedy, this account highlights the critical role of community and family support during hardship. The son's sacrifice of his own home and the public's generous donations underscore how far people will go for loved ones. Such stories serve as a poignant reminder of the importance of compassion and mutual aid in difficult times.
