Zelenskyy Cites 90% Opposition to Wartime Elections in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy on the Feasibility of Wartime Elections
According to Novyny.live: In a February 15 interview, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that 90% of Ukrainians are opposed to holding elections during the ongoing war. He emphasized that security is a fundamental prerequisite, arguing that elections would require either an end to the war or at least a ceasefire. This stance reflects the immense logistical and safety challenges of organizing a national vote under current conditions.
Zelenskyy stressed that the public understands the inherent dangers of an election during conflict.
“90% are against it because they understand it would be terrible,”the President said. He added that Ukraine could organize elections if there were a ceasefire lasting two to three months.
“We need safety for this,”Zelenskyy concluded, highlighting the necessity of creating secure conditions for citizens to participate in the electoral process.
The Position of Ukrainian Society
These remarks underscore a cautious public attitude toward the possibility of elections amid a continuing conflict, prioritizing stability and peace for the normalization of Ukraine's political situation. The issue of wartime elections is a topic of significant debate among Ukraine's international partners regarding democratic processes.
President Zelenskyy's statement about the lack of public support for wartime elections mirrors widespread societal anxiety over safety and stability. In an active combat zone, holding a vote is not just a political challenge but a profound social one, demanding a careful and measured approach. Without guaranteed peace and security, proceeding with elections could pose serious risks to citizens and further destabilize the country.
