According to ТСН: The issue of the military medical commission (VLK) remains relevant for servicemen as well as for reservists on duty. Legislation clearly defines the frequency of examinations and the rights of fighters to an extraordinary examination.

What decisions does the commission make

Based on the results of the medical examination, doctors can make one of four judgments. A person can be recognized as fit for service without restrictions or with certain restrictions, for example, for service in the TCK or training centers. The statuses of 'temporarily unfit' (requires treatment) and 'completely unfit' (exclusion from military registration) are also possible. If a person disagrees with the judgment, they can appeal to the district or central VLK or in court.

Validity periods of certificates

It is important to understand the rules for different situations. In peacetime, reservists must undergo a medical examination every 5 years. Reserve officers are checked during assessment, while non-commissioned officers are checked upon reassignment.

During mobilization periods, different rules apply: the VLK decision on fitness is only valid for one year from the date of examination. If a person is recognized as temporarily unfit, the deadlines depend on the situation in the country:

  • in peacetime – up to 12 months;

  • during a state of war – up to 6 months (after which a re-examination is required).

How a soldier can initiate an examination

A soldier can initiate a referral to the VLK if they feel a deterioration in their health. To do this, they must submit a report to the commander. The lawyer points out that this can be done not only on paper but also electronically via the 'Army+' app.

If the commander ignores the report or refuses to sign it, the law provides several ways to resolve the situation:

  1. Contact the Ministry of Defense hotline at 0 800 50 04 42.

  2. File a complaint with higher authorities.

  3. File a lawsuit in court to compel the commander to grant the referral.

In Ukraine, it is also planned to introduce 30 new scholarships for soldiers in honor of fallen warriors. These payments will replace the old scholarships for heroes of the Soviet era, which were abolished due to the decommissioning law.

Thus, soldiers can request medical examinations and receive new scholarships under the new rules, which underscores the state's support for the military and their families. All these changes reflect Ukraine's desire to adapt to modern conditions and create better conditions for those who defend the country.
