According to ТСН: Morning coffee may seem like a great start to the day, but new research suggests that it can worsen symptoms of chronic pain.

The study found that excessive coffee consumption may lead to increased pain sensations in older adults. Meanwhile, consuming fatty fish may help reduce pain perception.

“Those who followed a diet high in fish reported a pain level reduction of up to 44% over two years compared to those who reduced their consumption,” scientists say.

Researchers explain that components found in fish reduce inflammation, while increased coffee consumption makes nerve cells more sensitive to pain.

“Our findings have significant implications for healthcare, especially in combating chronic pain among older adults,” states the report from Nicolaus Copernicus University in Torun, Poland.

Scientists observed 205 healthy individuals aged 60 and older over two years, assessing pain levels and comparing coffee and fish consumption.

Pain was assessed on a ten-point scale, where zero meant no pain and ten indicated unbearable suffering. It turned out that men and women who consumed more fish reported a pain intensity reduction of 4.45 points compared to those who reduced their intake. In contrast, increased coffee consumption correlated with a pain intensity increase of 6.56 points.

“The link between increased coffee consumption and intensified pain suggests a role for caffeine in exacerbating pain perception. While low doses of caffeine can enhance analgesia in acute pain, chronic high consumption, as seen in our participants, may heighten pain sensitivity by sensitizing neurons,” scientists explained.

This research highlights the importance of a rational approach to nutrition, especially for older adults, for whom chronic pain is a common issue. It is apparent that replacing coffee with healthier options, such as fish, can significantly improve the quality of life and reduce pain perception.
