How to Thank a Military Personnel Without Creating Discomfort: Simple Rules.
First Lady Olena Zelenska presented a new part of the educational series 'People with War Experience. Dignity. Interaction.' It explains how to thank military personnel without creating discomfort for them. The First Lady announced this on her Telegram channel.
'You can express your feelings in words, gestures, or actions. For example, say: 'Thank you for your service.' Or use the gesture 'Because of you,' by placing your right hand on your chest. It's also appropriate to show gratitude to an unfamiliar veteran with a look, a smile, or a nod of the head,' the recommendations state.
Psychologists advise not to interrupt a person if they are busy; not to buy coffee or offer money without permission; to ask if it is appropriate to treat the person; to clarify what needs the warrior or their unit might have.
'No one is immune to communication mistakes. Society is only forming a new communication ethic that will consider the experiences of both warriors and civilians. In this process, it is perfectly normal to make mistakes and ask for forgiveness,' experts note.
It is recommended not to be shy to ask directly how to make interaction better for both sides. Do not be afraid to speak about your intentions and feelings, to try, and to thank.
'A person who wants to say thank you should feel the moment. First and foremost, not to be intrusive in this gratitude. It should be a quiet, calm appreciation for the military personnel's contribution,' shares one of the heroes of the educational series, Dmitry Kulibaba, a soldier of the 114th Territorial Defense Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Note that the educational series 'People with War Experience. Dignity. Interaction.' was created on the initiative of the Ministry of Digital Transformation as part of the 'How Are You?' mental health communication campaign of the All-Ukrainian program.
