Ukraine's Energy System on the Brink: Why the Power Goes Out After Restoration.
According to ТСН: After massive attacks by Russia, the situation in the energy system remains critical. Despite hourly schedules, many regions must resort to emergency power outages.
Experts point out that the main problem is network overload.
After the restoration of electricity supply, consumers massively turn on energy-intensive appliances, such as boilers, heaters, washing machines, and dishwashers. The network, which operates under critical conditions, cannot withstand the sudden load and fails.
“Light appears — and people immediately turn everything on at once. The equipment cannot withstand the voltage, the system becomes overloaded, leading to new accidents and additional hours without electricity,”
— say DTEK.
How to Avoid Emergency Outages:
To prevent equipment damage due to voltage spikes after the restoration of electricity supply and reduce the load on the network, it is important to follow a few rules:
Turn off devices: during the power outage, all powerful devices should be unplugged from the sockets, such as heaters, boilers, and washing machines.
Gradual switching on: after the power is restored, electrical appliances should be turned on gradually. First, turn on the necessary devices (chargers, lamps), and powerful devices at least 30 minutes later.
Voltage control: before plugging a device into the socket, check if the voltage is stable.
Night timer: if energy-intensive devices have timers, it is better to program them to work at night. Electrical heating should be turned on not at full capacity, but gradually.
It is wise to use electricity even during peak hours, which fall in the evening — approximately from 5 PM to 10 PM. This will also help reduce the load on the network, allowing households to stay with electricity longer.
Let us remind you that the country has entered a period of frosts after massive Russian shelling, which caused significant damage to energy infrastructure in several regions. Despite the increased load on the system and risks to the stability of electricity supply, Ukrenergo states that there are no grounds for significant revisions to the outage schedules.
The head of the company, Vitaliy Zaychenko, reported that the cold increases the consumption level, but these peak figures were taken into account in advance in planning hourly outages. According to him, the energy system is ready for the increased load, and changes to the current schedules are not planned.
