Now Is the Time to Plant Spring Garlic: Key Dates and Harvest Tips.
Growing Spring Garlic in Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Spring garlic is a widely cultivated crop that demands careful attention to specific planting guidelines. Across most regions of Ukraine, the ideal window for planting spring garlic falls between late March and the first half of April. Soil temperature should be in the range of +3…+5°C for optimal results. If planting is delayed, the number of cloves per head can drop dramatically—from 16–18 down to just 4–5—which severely reduces the final harvest.
Preparation and Planting
Proper preparation of planting material is a critical step. It is recommended to select large heads and disinfect the cloves before planting. When choosing a location, the best preceding crops for garlic include:
- cucurbits (pumpkins, squash, cucumbers)
- legumes
- cereal grains
- culinary herbs
However, planting garlic near peas or beans is not advised.
Cloves should be planted 3–4 cm deep, with 10 cm between individual cloves and 25–30 cm between rows. This spacing creates ideal growing conditions. In early May, a comprehensive fertilizer application is recommended: mix 30 g of superphosphate and 200 g of wood ash in 10 liters of water. During June, when the bulbs are forming, garlic requires increased levels of potassium and phosphorus to ensure a high-quality yield.
By following these guidelines, gardeners can successfully cultivate spring garlic and achieve a bountiful harvest.
Spring garlic farming plays an important role in Ukraine's agricultural sector, as this product is in high demand on the market. Proper adherence to planting techniques and crop care can significantly impact harvest outcomes, which in turn affects the economic stability of farming operations. Given Ukraine's specific climate conditions, timely planting and thorough material preparation are key factors in producing a top-quality crop.
