Russia attacked Ukraine with 205 drones on New Year's night: there are dead and new power outages

According to ТСН: On New Year's night, Russian forces carried out a drone attack on Ukraine, affecting the Odesa, Volyn, and Kharkiv regions, and in the morning, the Kherson region was also hit. The enemy again targeted the energy infrastructure, causing new power outages in several regions.

Attack on Odesa and the region

Several waves of strike drone attacks hit Odesa. The head of the Military Administration, Serhiy Lysak, reported numerous emergencies, including the fall of drones and debris,

“fires at infrastructure facilities, damage to residential buildings.”

Firefighters managed to quickly extinguish the fires in Odesa thanks to the coordinated work of rescuers, bomb technicians, and utility services.

The head of the Odesa Regional Administration, Oleg Kiper, clarified that a two-story residential building was affected by the attack, and a drone hit an apartment on the 17th floor, but without an explosion. There were no casualties or injuries.

The attack on the Odesa region occurred just minutes before the New Year, dealing a blow to critical energy infrastructure. A fire broke out at one of the energy facilities.

Due to Russian aggression, there are interruptions in power supply for key enterprises that ensure the viability of Odesa.

All services are working in an enhanced mode to eliminate the consequences of the attack.

Attack on the Volyn region

In the first hours of the New Year, the occupiers also attacked the Volyn region. Residents of Lutsk and Kovel heard explosions and the work of air defense forces.

The mayor of Lutsk, Ihor Polischuk, reported a powerful fire in the city:

“This is the kind of fire today in our native Lutsk instead of festive lights,”

The head of the Volyn Regional Administration, Ivan Rudnytskyi, noted that Russian Shahed-type drones attacked the region all night long. Some drones were shot down, but a few still hit their targets, causing fires in Lutsk and the Kovel district.

According to Volynenergo, 103,341 subscribers were left without electricity.

Relevant services are working at the impact sites, eliminating the consequences of the attack. There is no information about the injured or dead.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service published footage from the sites of fires that occurred as a result of attacks on critical infrastructure in Volyn, where over 90 rescuers fought the fire.

Attack on the Kharkiv region

Russian drone attacks affected residential areas of the Kharkiv region. In the Kupiansk district, a fire broke out in private homes and outbuildings, with the fire area reaching 110 square meters.

Fires also occurred in apartment buildings and private houses in the Chuhuiv district.

The consequences of the strikes were liquidated by 40 emergency service employees using eight units of equipment.

Attack on the Kherson region

The head of the Kherson Military Administration, Yaroslav Shanko, reported the first civilian casualty of the new year. A 31-year-old resident was seriously injured during enemy shelling in the Dniprovskyi district of Kherson. Shanko expressed condolences to the relatives of the deceased.

Power outages due to the Jan 1 attack

The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine reported that due to nighttime strikes on energy facilities in several regions, a significant number of consumers in the Volyn and Odesa regions were left without electricity, and new outages were recorded in the Chernihiv region.

Emergency recovery work is underway, and energy workers are doing their utmost to restore the power supply as soon as possible.

Also, on January 1, restrictions on electricity consumption were introduced in all regions of Ukraine: power restriction schedules for industry and business, as well as hourly power outages for the population.

How many drones were shot down by air defense on New Year's night

During the attack on Ukraine on New Year's night, Russia launched 205 strike drones of various types.

The Air Forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that in the morning, 176 drones of Shahed, Gerbera, and others were shot down in the north, south, and east of Ukraine. Meanwhile, 24 strike drones hit 15 locations.

Zelensky's reaction to the attack

The President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, commenting on the attack, noted that the Russian Federation deliberately carries the war into the new year. The occupiers carried out strikes in the Volyn, Rivne, Zaporizhzhia, Odesa, Sumy, Kharkiv and Chernihiv regions.

“The targets are our energy. Everywhere where necessary, rescuers are helping, energy workers are working to restore electricity after the strikes,”

— wrote Zelensky on social media.

He also urged the international community to continue providing Ukraine with assistance in the field of air defense:

“If attacks do not stop even during New Year's holidays, then air defense supplies cannot be delayed. The nomenclature of the scarce equipment among allies exists. We expect that everything agreed upon with America for our protection at the end of December will arrive on time,”

Thus, New Year's night in Ukraine, instead of a festive mood, brought the brutality of war. New attacks and new victims are occurring, confirming that Russian aggression knows no holidays. The situation in the regions remains tense, and utility services, energy workers, and rescuers continue to work to restore normal life for the population and provide electricity to the affected areas.
