According to ТСН: An explosion occurred near a police station in the western Mexican state of Michoacán, resulting in at least three deaths and six injuries.

This incident took place amid heightened security measures: the federal government deployed additional troops to the state following a series of high-profile attacks. The state's Attorney General reported that a vehicle exploded on the main highway in the municipality of Coahuayana.

According to the prosecutor's office, the driver of the vehicle died on the spot, two other victims died in the hospital, and six people were injured.

“Two of the deceased, who were taken to the hospital, were community police officers. Due to the powerful explosion, body fragments were scattered across the area, and nearby buildings were damaged,”
said community police chief Hector Zepeda.

Zepeda also added that the arrival of the Marines as part of the operation interrupted community police patrols. This police force ensures safety in many rural communities and has its roots in self-defense groups formed over ten years ago to protect against drug cartels.

Context of the Incident

Coahuayana is located near the Pacific coast, in western Michoacán, on the border with Colima, which is a territory of influence for the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The explosion occurred while Michoacán Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla was in Mexico City, where he was celebrating the anniversary of his party's rise to power alongside President Claudia Sheinbaum. Both politicians face criticism for the deteriorating security situation in the region, where drug cartels are fighting for territory.

At least three of the six most influential cartels operate in the state: CJNG, United Cartels, and New Michoacán Family, as well as several local armed groups, some of which support the Sinaloa Cartel.

Criminal organizations are increasingly using explosives, placing them alongside roads, burying them as mines, or dropping them from drones. Michoacán is also a significant supplier of chemical precursors for synthetic drugs; over the past two months, 17 drug laboratories have been dismantled here. Furthermore, the state is known for large avocado and lime production, which has been subjected to extortion by cartels for years.

In a government statement, it was noted that the cause of the explosion was “an explosive device”, but details are not being disclosed. Photos of the burnt vehicle have also surfaced online.

Just last month, President Sheinbaum sent 2,000 military personnel to Michoacán, adding them to the 4,300 permanent forces in the region after the assassination of a mayor who actively opposed the cartels.

This tragedy underscores the critical security situation in Michoacán, where the struggle between drug cartels results in casualties among the civilian population. The challenges faced by local authorities and the federal government highlight the need for new strategies to ensure safety in the region.
