According to ТСН: In the context of the spread of the new H3N2 flu strain, which is already being called the 'super flu' in the USA, experts emphasize the importance of not only vaccination but also proper nutrition to strengthen the immune system. One of the beneficial products during the virus season is bell pepper, and its color plays an important role.

The activity of the new flu strain is currently increasing: more than 30 states have recorded a 'very high' level of morbidity. At the end of December, the number of hospitalizations rose by more than 50%, and nearly one in three flu tests turned out positive.

The importance of vitamin C

Experts note that vaccination remains the most effective means of protection, but a balanced diet can also support the immune system. Vitamin C plays a special role, as it is a key element in combating viral infections.

Research shows that while vitamin C is traditionally associated with citrus fruits, bell peppers can contain even more of this vitamin, and their nutritional value depends on the color of the vegetable.

The benefits of red pepper

All varieties of sweet peppers are rich in antioxidants, but dietitians particularly highlight red pepper. The color indicates the degree of ripeness: green pepper is the least ripe, while red undergoes a longer ripening process, resulting in more beneficial substances.

According to dietitians, red bell pepper contains the highest amount of antioxidants and vitamins A and C. A study published in the International Journal of Food Science & Nutrition showed that the vitamin C content in red peppers can be up to 60% higher than in green.

One cup of chopped red bell pepper contains about 200 mg of vitamin C, which is nearly three times more than in an orange, exceeding the daily norm. In addition, pepper is rich in antioxidants such as capsanthin, lutein, and quercetin, which help reduce inflammation and protect cells from oxidative stress.

Cooking methods

Experts also emphasize the importance of the cooking method. Boiling or cooking over high heat can reduce the number of vitamins in foods. The best options are steaming or lightly sautéing. Since certain beneficial substances are fat-soluble, it is recommended to use extra virgin olive oil.

Dietitians advise combining pepper with proteins and whole grain products - for example, stuffing it with chicken or fish, quinoa, or brown rice. Such dishes will be not only nutritious but also beneficial for supporting the body during seasonal infections.

Do not forget that during a cold, the body needs support from the inside. Experts provided tips on products that can help strengthen immunity and alleviate symptoms of illness.
