Borrell calls on EU to support Ukraine

Russia is trying to break the will of Ukrainians by shelling energy infrastructure. This has prompted the EU and its partners to more actively support Ukraine on the "energy front." This was stated by the EU High Representative Josep Borrell.

He noted that the Russian invasion of Ukraine is a violation of international law and the UN Charter. But in the early stages of the war, Russia also directs its attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.

Borrell pointed out what consequences this could have for the civilian population of Ukraine, which could lose basic services such as energy supply and water provision. He also warned of a possible nuclear incident if Russia attacks energy stations.

The EU has already provided Ukraine with significant financial assistance to restore energy capabilities. The supply of air defense systems and orders for their production are also foreseen. Alternative routes for electricity supply have also been agreed upon.

But, according to Borrell, it is important to avoid the "we restore, they destroy" scenario. He called on partner countries to allow Ukraine to use Western weapons to attack Russia's airports and launch platforms.

In general, the EU and its members have provided more than 2 billion euros to support Ukraine's energy security. However, there is noted ambiguity in the support from some member countries.

Borrell stressed that supporting Ukraine on the "energy front" will be a key factor in its fight for survival during the winter period.
