Putin Rejected the Idea of a Christmas Truce: Why the War Will Not End.
According to ТСН: The Kremlin continues to ignore proposals to end the war, including the initiative of German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for a Christmas truce. At a recent meeting of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Vladimir Putin again emphasized the threat to Europe, demonstrating readiness for war and the possibility of using nuclear weapons. At the same time, Volodymyr Zelensky expressed hope that the United States would respond to Russia's statements about the intention to end the conflict.
Negotiations and Their Consequences
At the Fifth Ukrainian Central European Forum, analyst Andreas Umland explained that, unfortunately, we have not come closer to a ceasefire. The situation can be characterized as a theater of negotiations, which aims to demonstrate Ukraine's readiness for dialogue with Trump.
"I think the Ukrainians are interested in this as it shows Trump that they are ready for negotiations. But it is a complex game. Russia also pretends to be ready, but actually wants a partial capitulation of Ukraine. Europeans are worried that if we do not play this theater, Trump may completely withdraw support for Ukraine," the expert noted.
Difficulties in Cooperation with the USA
Andreas Umland emphasized the importance of exchanging intelligence between Ukraine and the U.S., stressing that without this, Ukrainian troops will find it difficult to continue the fight. Trump is using this situation to pressure Ukraine for concessions.
"It is a complicated situation. On one hand, it is impossible to surrender territory and sovereignty. On the other hand, one cannot lose the USA as a partner. In 2026, a certain theater of negotiations will continue. Putin also does not want to lose contact with Trump. But I do not think this will lead to any results," he believes.
Security Guarantees for Ukraine
Discussing security issues, Umland notes that proposals to deploy Western troops on Ukrainian territory are controversial. For Russia, this will be a red line that complicates achieving peace agreements.
"Secondly, there is no confidence that this will really work. It is unclear how Western troops would behave in the event of an attack by Russia," he adds.
"Therefore, the most constructive idea right now is a 'heavenly shield' or an integrated air defense zone. Not only over Western Ukrainian regions but also over central ones. And this could be started before the truce," concluded Andreas Umland.
This situation reflects that diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict continue to face significant challenges. Negotiations between the parties turn out to be more of a formality, while real progress in the peace process remains in question. The situation requires vigilance from the international community as it has potentially serious implications for regional security.
