Zelensky on NATO Membership: Why Ukraine Will Not Change Its Constitution.
According to ТСН: The President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky expressed his position regarding the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO, emphasizing that he does not see the need to amend the Constitution.
At a briefing, he noted:
“I do not believe that we need to change the Constitution of our state.”
Zelensky also stressed that only the Ukrainian people have the right to decide on issues related to the Constitution, and these decisions should not be made under pressure from Russia or other countries.
“This is our Constitution. And this is our course. We wanted such security guarantees, and we believe we deserve them.”
Ukraine's Prospects in NATO
The President reminded that the U.S. policy regarding Ukraine's NATO membership remains unchanged: “For now, they do not see us there.”
He also added:
“Everything in our life is ‘for now’. Perhaps, in the future, the position will change. Someone will realize that the Ukrainian army strengthens NATO, not the other way around. This is a matter of politics. The world is changing. Some live, some die.”
The President emphasized that the course towards NATO is a conscious choice of Ukraine, the goal of which is to obtain reliable security guarantees.
Earlier, Zelensky reported on a conversation with U.S. President Joe Biden regarding NATO, noting that he raised this issue:
“From the first dialogue, I honestly raised this issue. I directly asked whether Ukraine could be in NATO because we want this and understand that this is real security guarantees. This was before the war. President Biden told me: ‘No, you will not be in NATO.’”
Thus, Zelensky confirms that the issue of NATO membership remains relevant for Ukraine, but it requires careful discussion and consideration of the opinion of the people themselves. The situation in the international arena continues to change, which may affect Ukraine's further steps in this direction.
