Greenhouse Cucumber Prices Surge by a Third in Ukraine: What They Cost This March.
Sharp Rise in Greenhouse Cucumber Prices Across Ukraine
According to TSN.ua: Ukrainian markets are seeing a significant jump in greenhouse cucumber prices, driven by limited supply and strong consumer demand. As of the last ten days of March, cucumber costs are running 34% higher than during the same period last year.
Currently, greenhouse cucumbers are priced between 135 and 175 Ukrainian hryvnias per kilogram, which translates to roughly $3.07 to $3.98 per kilogram. Over the past week alone, prices have climbed by 10%, reflecting sustained interest in this product.
What’s Behind the Price Spike
Several factors are contributing to the increase:
- tight supply levels;
- robust demand;
- a cold snap that has hindered cucumber cultivation;
- reduced shipments of cucumbers from Turkey.
Together, these elements are shaping the current pricing landscape and impacting consumers across Ukraine.
The rising cost of greenhouse cucumbers highlights broader challenges in Ukraine’s agricultural sector, where supply and demand dynamics are under strain. Weather-related production limits and disruptions in external imports underscore the vulnerability of the food market in a globalized economy. This trend could fuel further price increases for other vegetables and food items, ultimately affecting household budgets throughout the country.
