According to ТСН: Vladimir Putin has chosen a strategy of 'silence,' ignoring aggressive US actions in Venezuela, as well as the seizure of Russian vessels. This is related to his desire to achieve a favorable conclusion to the war in Ukraine.

Silence as Strategy

The publication notes that recently the US carried out an operation to extract Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, as well as seized another sanctioned Russian tanker. Previously, such actions would have provoked outrage from Moscow and threats of nuclear weapons, but now the reaction has been limited to a formal statement from the Russian Ministry of Transport.

“He [Putin - ed.] has one goal - to emerge victorious in Ukraine, and everything else is subordinate to this goal… Why give the Americans a slap there [in Venezuela - ed.] and spoil relations with them?”

Any attempt to defend Maduro could lead to a complete break in relations with Trump, which the Kremlin cannot afford right now.

Global Retreat of Russia

The conflict in Ukraine has placed a huge burden on Moscow's resources. As a result, Russia is losing its influence in regions where it was previously dominant:

  • Syria: By the end of 2024, Bashar al-Assad's regime may fall, despite years of Russian support.

  • Caucasus: Armenia and Azerbaijan, former satellites of Moscow, are now signing peace agreements in the US.

  • Iran: Protests threaten the regime friendly to the Kremlin.

“As the country becomes more internally resilient to Western pressure, it also becomes weaker as a global player, as it lacks sufficient resources for its ambitions,” notes the expert.

Compensation through Terror

Unable to adequately respond to Trump, Putin shifts his dissatisfaction onto Ukraine. Ukrainian analysts believe that the recent missile strike 'Oreshnik' indicates an attempt to compensate for lost positions in geopolitics.

“He could do nothing in Latin America, he could do nothing against Trump, so he struck Ukraine. He is weak in geopolitics, but wants to emphasize that he is still here, in Ukraine,”

— notes a political scientist. Alongside this, Putin receives some positive news: Trump’s ambitions regarding Greenland may weaken NATO, which could be beneficial for Moscow. However, at this moment, the Kremlin has to come to terms with losses in Venezuela.

It should be noted that the recent attack on Ukraine was not only an act of terror against civilians, but also an important geopolitical signal. Western media characterized the 'Oreshnik' strike as a threat to Ukraine's allies.

This situation highlights that the Kremlin is forced to adapt its strategies due to diminishing resources and influence on the international stage. The abandonment of aggressive actions in Venezuela indicates the limitations of Russian capabilities in the context of growing isolation and pressure from the West. At the same time, attacks on Ukraine point to attempts to compensate for these losses, even if it threatens further escalations of the conflict.
