Condition of the Darnytsia Combined Heat and Power Plant

According to TSN.ua: Following significant damage from Russian shelling, which caused water leaks and widespread icing, the Darnytsia Combined Heat and Power Plant (CHPP) in Kyiv can now only provide heat to approximately 4,500 residential buildings, along with over 120 schools and kindergartens. The plant has been a target of attacks since last August, enduring nine mass assaults. This relentless targeting of energy infrastructure is a hallmark of the ongoing conflict, creating severe hardships for civilians.

A serious strike on February 3rd of this year further compounded the damage. The resulting water leak led to massive ice formation, severely hampering repair crews' access to the critical energy facility. While repair work is ongoing, a full restoration of the Darnytsia CHPP's operations will require at least two more months.

A Critical Situation

The situation at the Darnytsia CHPP remains critical. Further progress in restoring the heat supply is entirely dependent on security conditions in the region and the ability to safely conduct repairs.

The damage to this plant is part of a wider pattern of infrastructure destruction across Ukraine due to military actions, which critically complicates the provision of heat and electricity. During the winter months, when demand for heating peaks, the non-functioning of such energy facilities can lead to severe social and economic consequences. It is vital that repair work proceeds under the safest possible conditions, as further shelling could not only halt recovery efforts but also intensify the energy crisis in the capital.
