Odesa Detention Center Abuse: Inmate Forced Man to Crawl and Fetch Slippers with His Teeth, State Bureau Investigates.
Probe Launched into Detention Center Abuse Case
According to Espreso.tv: An investigation is underway in Ukraine after a video surfaced on social media showing an inmate at a pretrial detention center humiliating another detainee. The footage captures the suspect forcing the victim to crawl on the floor and carry slippers using only his teeth. The individual who suffered the abuse is believed to be an employee of a regional military enlistment office.
Criminal Charges Filed
Ukraine's State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) has opened a criminal case under Article 365, Part 2 of the Ukrainian Criminal Code, which deals with abuse of power. Additional charges are being pursued under Article 127, Part 3 (torture) and Article 146, Part 2 (unlawful imprisonment) of the same code. These legal steps reflect the severity of the alleged violations within a state-run facility.
In response to the scandal, the leadership of the Odesa Detention Center was suspended on June 7. The incident has sparked widespread public outrage and renewed calls for accountability in Ukraine's prison system, where human rights abuses have long been a concern.
The initiation of criminal proceedings and the removal of detention center officials signal a firm commitment by law enforcement to address rights violations. This case highlights the urgent need for systemic reforms in Ukraine's penitentiary system, as instances of torture and degradation remain persistent problems demanding state and societal action.
