Buckwheat Supply in Ukraine: The Real Picture

According to TSN.ua: Despite growing public concern over a possible shortage, Ukraine currently holds more than enough buckwheat reserves to satisfy domestic demand. According to experts, the recent price hikes are not due to a lack of supply, but rather a range of economic pressures.

The average Ukrainian consumes about 3 kilograms of buckwheat per year. With the country's population estimated at 27 million, the annual domestic requirement stands at roughly 81,000 metric tons. Yet in 2024, Ukrainian farmers harvested 127,000 metric tons—well above what is needed.

Meanwhile, the average market price for buckwheat has climbed above 54 hryvnias per kilogram. Analysts stress that this increase has nothing to do with scarcity. Economist Oleh Pendzyn explains:

“Buckwheat prices are rising not because there is a shortage today.” - Oleh Pendzyn

He added, “Where do you see a shortage? It’s being hyped up to the fullest.”

Key Drivers Behind the Price Increase

The main factors pushing prices higher include:

  • energy costs;
  • logistics;
  • packaging;
  • inflation.

These economic forces—not a lack of buckwheat—are what determine the product’s market price. As a result, despite consumer fears, Ukrainian producers are fully capable of meeting the country’s needs, reflecting the stability of the nation’s food supply.

This situation highlights how important it is to understand the market mechanisms behind pricing. Rising food costs are often driven not just by shifts in supply and demand, but also by external economic factors such as inflation and fluctuating resource expenses. In times of global market volatility, informed consumers are better equipped to avoid panic and draw accurate conclusions about food security.
