According to ТСН: In Peru, doctors encountered an unprecedented case: a 19-year-old woman gave birth to a healthy child despite the fact that the pregnancy occurred not in the uterus, but in the liver.

This condition, known as liver ectopic pregnancy, occurs when a fertilized egg attaches to the tissues of the liver. Since this organ has a very rich blood supply, the risks to both the mother and the fetus are extremely high.

Unique medical case

Specialists at the National Hospital Cayetano Heredia in San Martin de Porres described this case as a 'double miracle of life.' Peru's Minister of Health Luis Kiroza Aviles noted that the operation was very complicated, but doctors were able to save both the mother and the newborn.

The girl, weighing 3.6 kg, was born via cesarean section at the Carlos Lanfranco La Osa Hospital.

This case became the first successful one in Peru and only the fourth in the world where both mother and child survived after the implantation of an embryo in the liver.

Difficulties and complications

Most ectopic pregnancies—about 96%—occur in the fallopian tubes. Only 4% develop in the abdominal cavity, and attachment to the liver is nearly unique. In this case, the fetus received nutrients through the liver arteries, which allowed it to develop to term.

It is worth noting that the child carried to 40 weeks, while in three previous similar cases, births occurred only at 36 weeks.

After birth, doctors were unable to immediately remove the placenta due to significant bleeding. The woman was transferred to the National Hospital Cayetano Heredia, where interventional radiology was used to embolize the arteries that supplied the placenta. Only after this was her condition stabilized.

Mother and child returned home on December 3.

The woman was unaware of her pregnancy for 9 months and left the hospital with a baby.

This unique case of a 'double miracle' in Peru highlights not only the complexity and rarity of such pregnancies but also the ability of medical staff to handle critical situations. The success of the doctors and the happy ending of this story is an important reminder of the power of medicine and hope, even in the toughest conditions.
