Scientists believe that coffee can be beneficial for people with type 2 diabetes, who rely on medications and injections to maintain stable glucose levels. Researchers compared compounds in roasted arabica with the drug acarbose, which slows down the breakdown of carbohydrates.
It was found that coffee inhibits the same digestive enzyme as the drug, lowering blood sugar levels after meals. This is particularly important for people with type 2 diabetes, as their bodies cannot independently regulate glucose levels due to insulin resistance or deficiency.

They block the enzyme alpha-glucosidase, which breaks down carbohydrates, slowing down the release of glucose into the blood after meals. This mechanism of action is similar to that of acarbose, opening new possibilities for diabetes treatment.
Researchers emphasize that this discovery could serve as the basis for developing “functional products” with natural properties to lower glucose levels.
The Impact of Coffee on Diabetes Risk
Extended studies have confirmed that each additional cup of coffee per day reduces the risk of developing type 2 diabetes, with the greatest benefit coming from consuming three to five cups daily. There are over 400 million sufferers worldwide, making these results highly significant for the therapy of this disease.
Experts also stress that proper coffee consumption can help accelerate metabolism, burn fat, boost energy levels, and maintain a healthy weight balance without radical measures.
