Mazut Spills into the Southern Bug: Large-Scale Pollution Investigated in Vinnytsia

According to ТСН: Law enforcement agencies in Vinnytsia region have recorded pollution of one of Ukraine's largest rivers. Prosecutors discovered that harmful substances had entered the waters of the Southern Bug, which may threaten the region's ecosystem.

This was reported by the Vinnytsia Regional Prosecutor's Office on its official Telegram channel.

Oil Products Spill

The incident occurred in the Haisyn district. Local prosecutors recorded the spill of mazut into the Ladyzhyn reservoir, with pollution detected near the Ladyzhyn thermal power plant.

In response to this emergency event, law enforcement began a pre-trial investigation. The criminal case was classified as 'violation of water protection rules' (part 1 of Article 242 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine).

Searches and Expert Studies

To clarify the causes and circumstances of the leak, urgent searches were conducted on the territory of the Ladyzhyn thermal power plant. Investigators, together with ecologists, collected samples for analysis:

  • water from the reservoir;

  • soil from the coastal area;

  • pollutant.

These materials have been sent for laboratory and expert studies to determine the level of environmental damage. Currently, preliminary investigative actions are underway, aimed at establishing specific individuals involved in the water pollution.

It is worth noting that any human activity without adhering to sanitary and ecological standards can lead to the pollution of water bodies and groundwater. Ecologists emphasize regions where this issue is most acute and analyze the causes of the situation.
