Ukraine's Ongoing Energy Emergency

According to TSN.ua: Ukraine continues to face a severe energy crisis caused by Russian attacks on critical infrastructure. Despite clear skies—which typically reduce strain on the power grid—the situation remains dire. On April 2, 2023, nationwide electricity consumption dropped by 3.5% compared to the previous Wednesday, reflecting the scale of the disruptions.

As of the morning of April 2, customers in several regions are still without power, including:

  • Kharkiv
  • Sumy
  • Donetsk
  • Dnipropetrovsk
  • Zaporizhzhia
  • Cherkasy
  • Odesa

These blackouts highlight the severe consequences of the assault on energy infrastructure. Earlier that morning, Russian forces launched a drone strike on Kharkiv using combat unmanned aerial vehicles.

In the Dnipropetrovsk region, the attacks resulted in one fatality and two injuries, including a 12-year-old boy. Amid the ongoing crisis, officials from Ukrenergo are urging residents to limit the use of high-power electrical appliances between 6:00 PM and 10:00 PM. At the same time, the company recommends shifting energy-intensive tasks to periods when solar power plants are operating at peak efficiency.

Energy Sector Situation

The energy sector remains under significant strain, and future steps will depend on how events unfold and the capacity to restore power supplies.

This crisis persists against a backdrop of relentless attacks on critical infrastructure, making recovery efforts increasingly difficult. Although electricity consumption has decreased, outages continue across many regions—a stark reminder of the war's long-lasting impact. Calls to limit appliance usage underscore the urgent need to conserve energy resources under these critical conditions, directly affecting daily life for millions of Ukrainians.
