Kharkiv Expands Its Underground Education System

According to TSN.ua: Kharkiv is increasing the number of its subterranean schools. A new facility has opened at the '23 August' metro station, becoming the city's 21st underground educational space. Four classrooms have been set up there for students from Shevchenkivskyi district lyceums, with 330 children attending classes in two shifts. This initiative represents a crucial step in safeguarding students and providing a comfortable learning environment.

It is important to note that nearly 20,000 children in Kharkiv now have the opportunity to attend in-person classes in the safety of underground shelters. Parents and pupils have responded positively. One student, Kira Kochura, remarked:

"I really like it because I'm here with my friends and not in online classes. It's all very cool!"

Future Plans

Furthermore, the city authorities plan to construct Ukraine's first underground kindergarten by 2026. Funding for this project will be shared equally: 50% will come from the municipal budget and the other 50% from the state budget. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov stated:

"We have already prepared the documentation for the underground kindergarten. This is a more expensive project due to the specific requirements for play and sleeping areas."

It is well understood that foundational learning skills are developed during primary school. Educator Olha Demenko emphasized:

"Moreover, for children aged 6–8, prolonged exposure to computer screens is harmful to their eyesight and overall development."

The growth of underground educational facilities in Kharkiv demonstrates how the city's infrastructure is adapting to contemporary safety demands. These institutions not only provide physical security but also help children socialize in a familiar school setting. The planned construction of an underground kindergarten highlights the city administration's commitment to creating safe and comfortable conditions for its youngest residents.
