The Situation in Kherson

According to UATV: The city of Kherson continues to endure terror from Russian military forces, resulting in significant civilian casualties and destruction. In January 2023 alone, 96 people were wounded, including five children, while 18 civilians lost their lives. The relentless shelling has crippled the city's critical infrastructure, causing severe disruptions to heating, electricity, and water supplies. This southern Ukrainian port city, liberated in late 2022, remains perilously close to the front lines.

Approximately 90,000 people, including displaced persons seeking safety, currently reside in Kherson. Many are forced to take shelter in basements to protect themselves from the constant threat of attack.

“We have a gas cylinder here. A portable heater. If we have to spend the night, maybe someone will come with children, we have a heater.”

— Serhii, a local resident

These words underscore how vital mutual support has become during this difficult time.

Drone Warfare Intensifies

The situation for residents is further complicated by Russian forces deploying around 2,000 drones per week for reconnaissance and attacks. Nadiia, another Kherson resident, expressed her profound distress:

“They 'fry' it well over there. Nothing is left there now, just ruins. Oh, Lord, I just hope there will be somewhere to return to.”

— Nadiia, a resident of Kherson

This statement reflects the deep anguish of people who have lost their homes and cling to hope for a better future.

Thus, Kherson remains under the pressure of horrific bombardment and the consequences of war, its inhabitants demonstrating remarkable courage and solidarity in facing these hardships. The city's plight is a stark example of the humanitarian crisis arising from ongoing military conflict. The constant shelling, which leads to civilian deaths and infrastructure ruin, creates immense difficulties for the population. Neighborhood and community support has become critically important as people are forced to confront daily danger and uncertainty.
