Great Britain Opens Culinary Capital: What We Know About the Surprise City.
A Delicious Journey to Bury St Edmunds
According to The Sun: The morning by a small wooden cottage in Bury St Edmunds started with a sandwich of cured ham and cheese.
Modern bread, a generous slice of cheddar, thick slices of meat, and perhaps a bit too much butter — delicious!
SuppliedWhile the auctioneer rapidly announces bids for cows, I savor the taste of this sandwich — a reminder of the culinary delights of my hometown that I discovered decades ago.
This return to Bury St Edmunds, known for its gastronomic culture, is filled with new discoveries.
Exploring Delicious Spots
The old market is a thing of the past, but its place has been taken by a lively area with great food and drink establishments.
Before starting our tasting journey, my wife and I visited the Giffords Hall winery.
This wonderful establishment, located on an ancient glacial riverbed in the Suffolk countryside, truly represents English wines.
Our guide Gary led us through 19 acres, sharing the story of the company that began its journey in 2009.
Award-winning wines impress and are quickly consumed during tastings among enormous steel tanks.
Then we headed to Bury, where our gastronomic headquarters was the luxurious Angel Hotel. The hotel is located in the town's historic square with views of the cozy abbey gardens.
Our stylish Signature Ivy room has a clawfoot bathtub and stunning views.
SuppliedExploring and Culinary Delights
Shortly after settling in, we embarked on a culinary tour of the city. Our guide Steven Moody amazed me with a stream of information that I hadn’t known before.
He became a true source of knowledge about Bury, and it was nice to realize how many interesting facts exist.
As he reveals details of King Edmund's history, I enjoy delicious sausage rolls at No5 Angel Hill from owner Charlie.
Next, we encounter incredible cheese and chili scones at Procopio’s Pantry, which deserve special praise.
We wash down tasty dishes with fine beer at Nethergate Shop & Tap Room.
On our way, we pass by The Nutshell — the smallest pub in Britain, and the wooden Greggs, which is probably the most luxurious in the country.
Bury can also boast an excellent Wine Cellar, the Marimba chocolate shop, and the Adnams shop, where I would dream of lingering if it weren’t for dinner at The Angel's Vaults restaurant.
At the Underground Supper Club, a wide range of dishes is served, including a caring plate, seafood ravioli, and tasty lamb stew with parmesan polenta.
However, it was the atmosphere that provided the finishing touch to our experience.
After a hearty dinner, we enjoyed amazing cocktails at the upstairs bar.
Incredible Dinner at Bellota

A surprising highlight of the evening was Bellota. This cozy establishment is just a few steps away from the old pub, which I may have visited more than once in my youth.
Chef Ruben and his wife, pastry chef Gabi, offer impressive seven-course (£75) and eight-course (£85) tasting menus.
Guests sit around an open kitchen, watching the preparation of an unforgettable dinner.
Each dish was of incredible standard.
However, particularly memorable was the fish, squid ink with salsa verde, Thai green curry ice cream, and roasted sweet pepper in a luxurious manchego sauce.
The closeness to other guests creates a convivial atmosphere — a wonderful moment when everyone enjoys delicious dishes.
We had already had the chance to visit many great restaurants — including The Fat Duck, which was at the top of my wishlist.
Bellota does not fall short of Michelin-starred establishments.
After this, our last stop is lunch at the only Michelin-starred restaurant in Suffolk — Pea Porridge.
This phenomenal restaurant is tucked away near the city center. From the outside, it looks simple, and you might mistakenly take it for a tea room.
But stepping inside, it’s easy to understand why it has received the prestigious Michelin award. The atmosphere is cozy and laid-back, while the cuisine impresses with its flavors.
Starters of local venison and wagyu rolls, as well as John Dory tempura, could easily be main dishes.
The rabbit and Cornish blue stew left us with full bellies, but our taste buds were asking for more.
The owners, charming Jurga and chef Justin, opened the small green doors in 2009.
The pride on Jurga's face when she talks about Pea Porridge is evident.
This same pride is what I feel when I talk about being born and raised in Bury.
Mmmmmm. Bread.
I wonder if they can make sandwiches with cured meat and cheese here…
