Here, locals celebrate Chinese New Year while churches and mosques compete for attention alongside numerous temples.

It’s a fruit salad of culture,”— says my driver Ruben when I arrive at the tropical paradise of Mauritius.
This is reflected in all aspects of life — from music to architecture, and of course, in the cuisine.
Mauritius is famous for its incredible beaches and warm climate.
Culinary Delights of Mauritius
But there is much more here than just beautiful coastline. If you leave your sunbed for a while, you can discover the amazing cuisine that has emerged from centuries of immigration.
Arabic and European sailors visited Mauritius as early as the 10th century, but the island didn’t start being actively explored until the arrival of the Portuguese 500 years ago.
Later it was colonized by the Dutch and eventually became a French and British colony when immigrants from India, China, Mozambique, and Southeast Asia arrived to work on sugar plantations.
One of the most popular dishes is gateaux piment — chili bites. These fried balls contain yellow peas, onions, green chili, fresh herbs, and spices.
They are somewhat similar to falafels, but spicier and less dry — simply incredibly delicious.
Overview of local delicacies at the market
I tasted them in the home of Konita, who invites tourists several times a week as part of the Attitude Hotels experience, connecting guests with locals.
After she treated me to homemade rum, she showed me how to mix the ingredients by hand.
To achieve the perfect crunchy texture, it's necessary to pierce the balls before dropping them into boiling oil.
Another dish worth trying is salmi poulet, a chicken stew marinated in spices and red wine. It has an unusual flavor with deep, almost festive notes.
Global influences continue in boulettes — steamed dumplings made from tapioca. The most common fillings are chayote, a greenish vegetable often used in local cuisine.
The best place to enjoy them is at Cafe Shanghai in the capital, Port Louis. This establishment is packed with locals during lunch, so it's better to come during less busy hours.
Water Activities and Delicious Dishes
After enjoying local dishes, I recommend trying a refreshing Alouda drink for just 50 rupees. This creamy beverage resembles a milkshake.
For dessert lovers, a visit to Chinese bakeries is a must.

I recommend Mister Chu for Chu Chong Gao. These chewy rice cakes made from rice flour and various fillings (from strawberry to pineapple) resemble mochi.
The Experience of Beautiful Mauritius
All these dishes encourage a visit to the Takamaka Boutique Winery with a view of Mare aux Vacoas — the largest reservoir in Mauritius.
Despite French production methods, no grapes are grown here. Takamaka wine is made from lychee, hand-picked and processed, making it unique in the world.
Lychee has a delicate flavor with notes of peach and apricot.

Of course, visiting the tropical island of Mauritius is impossible without water activities.
While snorkeling from the beaches of the Lagoon Attitude Hotel on the northern coast, I watched a wild turtle exploring a coral reef just a few meters away.
Later, as I paddled along the coast near the Zilwa Attitude Hotel, flying fish leaped over the bow of my boat.
They put on a real show, jumping three feet out of the water.
Fish, of course, must be on the menu — especially dorado (mahi-mahi), which I tried on the private island of Zilwa Attitude.
This dish was very tasty, with a light burn, sweet, crunchy white fish.
Attitude HotelsAnd the pineapple salad served alongside it was the perfect complement — although, perhaps, the fact that I ate it on a sunny beach also contributed to this impression!
Mauritius is not just a land of picturesque beaches, but also a unique gastronomic journey reflecting its diverse culture. Thanks to its immigration history, the island is home to various culinary traditions that can satisfy even the most discerning palate.
