Arctic Cold -20°C in Ukraine: How to Warm Up Properly and Avoid Frostbite

According to ТСН: This weekend we are expecting serious arctic cold: the temperature may drop to -20°C. Such a sudden drop in temperature will require special attention to clothing and caution during outdoor walks.

When the temperature drops to -20°C, regular clothing is no longer sufficient. In such cold, the body tries to conserve heat, operating at its limits. For comfort and survival in extreme conditions, it is important to follow the rules of 'arctic' preparation.

How to Dress in Frost: Layering Strategy

The main mistake in severe frost is to wear just one, even very warm, piece of clothing. True warmth is provided by the layer of air between the layers. Experts recommend adhering to three layers:

  • The first layer is thermal underwear, which wicks moisture away from the skin. It should fit snugly to the body to reduce the space for perspiration. It is best to combine merino wool and synthetic fibers: synthetic material dries quickly, while wool retains heat even when wet.

  • The next insulating layer is fleece or dense wool clothing, which retains heat. Especially effective is 'High Loft' fleece, as its structure creates a voluminous and warm air cushion.

  • The last layer is a membrane jacket or down jacket with a water-repellent coating. This layer must be absolutely windproof, as even the slightest air penetration can disrupt thermal balance.

Protecting Extremities: Hands, Feet, and Head

Up to 50% of heat is lost through the extremities and head. In frost, the body constricts blood vessels in the hands and feet to conserve heat for more vital organs.

  • Hands. It is recommended to choose mittens without finger separation so that they can warm each other.

  • Feet. Footwear should be one size larger, and felt insoles and wool socks will help retain heat.

  • Head and Face. A hat should cover the ears, and for the face, it is better to use a buff or balaclava. It is important not to close the mouth with a scarf too tightly to avoid ice formation.

Internal Fuel: Proper Food and Drinks

In frost, the body needs energy to generate heat, so high-calorie food is appropriate:

  • Fats and Proteins. It is recommended to eat hearty products such as lard, nuts, butter, or meat, as fats provide a steady supply of heat.

  • Temperature of Drinks. It is better to drink warm but not hot tea — boiling water can lead to rapid heat loss in the body.

  • Alcohol Prohibition. Alcohol can create an illusion of warmth, but actually worsens the situation.

Survival Techniques During Movement

If you have to be outdoors for a long time:

  • Do not stand still. It is better to tense and relax large muscles or make circular movements with your arms; this activates blood circulation.

  • Breathe slowly through your nose; this will help warm the air before it enters your lungs.

  • Have self-heating packets that activate upon contact with air — they can be useful in a critical moment.

What Absolutely Should Not Be Done During Severe Frosts

  • Do not rub your skin with snow. This can cause micro-damage, leading to frostbite.

  • Do not use water-based moisturizers before going outside, as water in the pores of the skin freezes.

  • Avoid contact of bare hands with metal surfaces. This can lead to serious burns.

By following these rules, you will be able to make extreme frosts more manageable and comfortable.

These tips can be useful not only in critical weather conditions but also for those planning active outdoor recreation. It is important not to forget about your safety and to keep warm in any conditions.
