Drone Attack on QatarEnergy Halts Major LNG Production, Threatening Global Supply.
Qatar's Oil and Gas Production Disrupted
According to TSN.ua: In 2023, Qatar temporarily halted its liquefied natural gas (LNG) production following an attack by two Iranian drones on QatarEnergy facilities. This incident occurred amidst a rising wave of attacks across the Middle East, impacting not only gas but also regional oil output. As the world's second-largest LNG exporter after the United States, Qatar accounts for roughly 20% of global supply. Approximately 82% of Qatar's output is destined for consumers in Asia, making this disruption particularly significant for the world's most populous continent.
Regional Supply Chains Under Strain
The attacks on energy infrastructure have had a wider regional impact. Most oil production in Iraqi Kurdistan has been halted, while Saudi Arabia suspended operations at its Ras Tanura refinery, which has a daily capacity of 550,000 barrels. Global energy markets are facing one of the most severe shocks in recent decades, as the Middle East provides about 20% of the world's oil supply. The situation is further complicated by joint U.S.-Israeli strikes on Iran, which are also disrupting the region's oil exports.
Freight rates for tankers on the Middle East-to-China route have more than tripled, signaling heightened demand and market instability. The benchmark Brent crude oil price has recently climbed to around $70 per barrel, adding further pressure to global energy markets. This price volatility underscores the fragility of supply chains that many Western economies depend on.
This situation highlights the vulnerability of global energy supplies to geopolitical risks. - Source unknown
Faced with rising oil and gas prices, importing nations are actively seeking alternative energy sources, a shift that could alter market dynamics in the near future.
