China Maps Ocean Floors for Submarine Warfare: Dozens of Vessels Operating Near the US.
China's Seabed Mapping Initiative
According to TSN.ua: China has deployed dozens of research vessels to map the seabed in strategic areas of the world's oceans, including the Pacific, Indian, and Arctic Oceans. According to experts, this effort is critically important for preparing potential underwater warfare against the United States and its allies. The scale of this seabed mapping program highlights China's growing maritime ambitions.
Key Program Components
A central element of this initiative is the research vessel Dong Fang Hong 3, which operated near Taiwan and Guam in 2024-2025. In October 2024, the ship inspected Chinese underwater sensors off the coast of Japan, and in March 2025, it navigated between Sri Lanka and Indonesia. The surveys cover waters around Guam, Hawaii, and near American military installations, underscoring the military dimension of China's oceanic research.
Experts believe the data gathered from these surveys could be extremely valuable for preparing battlespace conditions for Chinese submarines. As
Peter Scott noted: 'This data could significantly influence China's strategy in the region.'Collin Koh added that this demonstrates China’s ability to operate far from its shores, pointing to the rapid development of the country's naval defense and military capabilities, as emphasized by Zhou Chun.
China aims to become a polar superpower by the 2030s, which aligns with its broader efforts to strengthen maritime military power. Seabed mapping and the development of new combat capabilities are crucial steps on this path, reflecting the seriousness of China's military intentions.
China's growing oceanic activity has raised concerns among the international community, particularly the United States and its allies, who are already monitoring shifts in Beijing's military strategy. Seabed mapping is becoming not only a tool for scientific research but also a key element in preparing for potential military conflicts. The development of new technologies and underwater capabilities by China could significantly alter the regional balance of power, requiring close observation by other nations.
