China Urges Ukraine and Russia to Halt Fire Immediately: UN Weighs In.
Beijing's Push for Peace Talks
According to UATV: On June 30, 2023, during a UN Security Council session, China's Permanent Representative Sun Lei called on both Ukraine and Russia to cease hostilities and resume peace negotiations. He stressed that political will is essential for a peaceful resolution to the conflict. According to him,
“China continues to call for an immediate ceasefire and the resumption of peace talks.”
Deepening Ties Between China and Belarus
Around the same time, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko made an unannounced visit to Beijing, where he met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping. Lukashenko described the relationship between Minsk and Beijing as “ironclad,” highlighting the strategic cooperation between the two nations amid rising tensions between Belarus and Ukraine. Xi Jinping stated that
“China and Belarus should maintain strategic communication to promote the continuous development of bilateral relations at a high level.”
It is worth noting that the number of civilian casualties from the military operations has reached alarming levels. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also commented on Russia’s reliance on China, saying:
“I am open to meeting with President Xi.”These developments underscore the complex situation in the region and the search for new pathways toward a peaceful settlement.
China's calls for peace talks reflect its ambition to play a more active role in resolving the Ukraine-Russia conflict, signaling its growing influence on the global stage. At the same time, the strengthening of ties between China and Belarus could shift the conflict's dynamics, especially given Minsk's close relationship with Moscow. The situation in Ukraine remains dire, highlighting the urgent need for action to protect civilians.
