U.S. Sees Chinese Jet Maneuvers Near Taiwan as Rehearsal for Attack.
Mounting Tensions Around Taiwan
According to TSN.ua: During the 'Justice Mission' military exercises, Chinese military aircraft performed hazardous maneuvers close to Taiwanese F-16 fighter jets. The United States interprets these actions as a rehearsal for a potential assault on Taiwan. Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command, stated that
"China's actions should be viewed as a rehearsal for an attack on Taiwan."
In a significant escalation, a Chinese J-16 fighter jet fired decoy missiles toward a Taiwanese F-16 in December, highlighting the growing regional strain. During this encounter, the J-16 flew perilously close to the F-16 in what was described as a 'near weapons-firing position.' In a separate incident, a J-16 also flew under a Chinese H-6K bomber northwest of Taiwan, raising further alarm in both U.S. and Taiwanese defense circles.
Strategic Shifts in China
These military provocations follow a pattern of increased pressure from Beijing. In his New Year's address, Xi Jinping renewed threats against Taiwan, underscoring the gravity of the situation. Late last year, China conducted its largest-ever 'Justice Mission 2025' military drills, a key component of Beijing's regional strategy. Furthermore, in early 2026, Xi Jinping purged elements of the military's top command, a move that may signal shifts in China's defense policy and preparedness.
The situation around Taiwan remains highly volatile, with Chinese military aircraft activity causing deep concern within the international community. China's growing assertiveness and extensive military exercises suggest an intent to solidify its regional dominance, thereby increasing the risk of conflict. Given Taiwan's strategic importance, these developments carry serious implications for stability in the Indo-Pacific and for the already strained relationship between the U.S. and China. The Taiwan Strait is one of the world's most critical flashpoints, where any miscalculation could have global consequences.
