Ukraine’s Path to the EU: The Latest Developments

According to TSN.ua: Several EU member states have proposed postponing Ukraine’s full membership by 10 to 20 years to evaluate the progress of its reforms. In an interview with 'RBC-Ukraine', Deputy Prime Minister Taras Kachka stated that Kyiv finds this unacceptable, though alternative oversight mechanisms could be considered. Ukraine, which was granted EU candidate status in 2022, is pushing hard for deeper integration with the European Union.

Peace Plan and Negotiations

A proposed 20-point peace plan includes the possibility of Ukraine joining the EU by 2027. Accession talks kicked off in late 2023, with formal negotiations scheduled for 2024. Taras Kachka stressed the need for swift progress:

“We can move quickly. Everything asked of us is realistic—it requires the normal functioning of the Verkhovna Rada, the government, and other institutions. After that, Ukraine and the 27 EU member states sit down together, and a working group is formed to draft the treaty on the terms of accession to the European Union.” - Taras Kachka

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has also highlighted the importance of membership for Ukraine’s security, noting that the country aims to join the bloc within this year, as membership is seen as a key security guarantee. Despite proposals from some EU countries to slow the process, the Ukrainian side is determined to take active steps to shorten the timeline for accession.

Overall, the Ukrainian government continues to pursue necessary reforms and integration measures to meet EU requirements and secure its place in the European community.

As of 2023, Ukraine is actively working to fulfill EU conditions to accelerate its entry, despite potential obstacles from certain member states. EU membership is viewed not only as an economic opportunity but also as a critical security guarantee for Ukraine amid the current geopolitical landscape. Consequently, ongoing reforms and vigorous diplomatic efforts remain central to Ukraine’s European integration process.
