Kremlin's Stance for Peace: Full Withdrawal of Ukrainian Forces from Donbas Required.
Kremlin's Conditions for Ceasing Hostilities
According to TSN.ua: The Kremlin has outlined a condition for ending the fighting, stating that a complete withdrawal of Ukrainian Armed Forces from the Donbas region is necessary. Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary for the Russian president, emphasized that this is a key aspect for achieving peace in the area. This demand directly concerns territory that has been a central battleground since 2014.
Furthermore, Yuri Ushakov, an advisor to President Putin, noted that without resolving this territorial issue, a long-term settlement of the conflict is impossible. This underscores the significant importance the Kremlin places on this point in any negotiations.
Talks in Abu Dhabi
This stance comes after a recent meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Stephen Witzoff and Jared Kushner, which lasted over three hours and concluded late at night. According to reports, Russia plans to be present in Abu Dhabi on January 23-24 for talks involving Ukraine and the United States, with its delegation having received clear instructions from Putin on its course of action.
Dmitry Peskov remarked that the Kremlin highly values the peace initiatives of the U.S. administration, indicating a readiness for dialogue, albeit under the conditions set forth by Russia.
The Kremlin's demand for the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces from Donbas highlights the entrenched positions in the conflict. This approach is likely to complicate the negotiation process, as Ukraine is highly unlikely to accept terms it views as threatening its territorial integrity. The upcoming talks in Abu Dhabi, involving U.S. representatives, could become a significant step in seeking a compromise, but the fundamental conditions of the conflict remain deeply challenging for all parties involved.
