Neurolog in Rivne Region Fined and Ordered to Donate to Ukraine's Military for Bribery.
The Case of the Rivne Region Doctor
According to Novyny.live: A neurologist in Ukraine's Rivne Region has been convicted of demanding bribes in exchange for issuing fraudulent military medical documents. On September 22, 2022, the doctor accepted 4,000 hryvnias for a document that granted a conscript a two-month deferral from military service. This type of corruption directly undermines national mobilization efforts during wartime.
The physician's illicit activities continued with the acceptance of an additional 5,000 hryvnias in December 2022 and January 2023 for falsifying records to show the individual was receiving in-patient hospital treatment.
Court Ruling and Penalties
In court, the doctor pleaded guilty under a plea agreement. As part of this deal, he was ordered to donate 50,000 hryvnias to the Armed Forces of Ukraine and pay a fine of 34,000 hryvnias. The court also barred him from serving on a military medical commission for one year. The verdict can still be appealed within a 30-day period.
The case has sparked significant public outcry, highlighting persistent issues of corruption within the medical sector, particularly concerning military conscription. Such scandals are especially damaging during a time of national defense.
This case underscores the critical importance of combating corruption in Ukraine, particularly during wartime, when matters of military conscription and medical documentation are of paramount importance.
Extorting money for falsified documents jeopardizes not only the integrity of legal processes but also national security. The widespread attention this case has received may lead to stricter oversight of medical professionals involved in military-related assessments.
