Holiday pastries are dangerous for dogs: which ingredients cause poisoning.
According to ТСН: Experts warn: popular seasonal dishes, including traditional meat pies, can be dangerous for dogs. Although these treats often appear safe, their composition contains ingredients that can poison our four-legged friends, potentially leading to serious poisoning and expensive treatment.
Canine expert at Kennel Store, Michael Nelson, notes that Christmas pies and puddings usually contain raisins, currants, and other compounds that can harm dogs. Even small amounts of these components can cause vomiting, diarrhea, kidney problems, and other serious consequences. Any consumption is risky, so owners must act quickly.
RSPCA emphasizes that treating dogs who have eaten toxic products, such as raisins or chocolate, can cost between £350 to £500 (approximately from 19,600 to 28,000 hryvnias) as part of urgent veterinary care. During the holiday season, when the financial burden is already significant, such expenses can become a substantial problem for families.
Michael Nelson stresses that the issue lies not only in the negligence of owners: dogs are naturally curious about food and can easily reach treats left unattended. One pie eaten secretly from the owner can lead to hospitalization at the veterinary clinic that very night.
Signs that may indicate poisoning in a dog
Experts advise closely observing the animal's condition and being attentive to the following symptoms:
prolonged or recurrent vomiting;
diarrhea;
severe lethargy, lack of usual activity;
tremor or noticeable shaking;
refusal of food or water.
Nelson emphasizes: if a dog exhibits at least one of these symptoms after possible contact with holiday dishes, it is urgent to consult a veterinarian.
Additionally, some dogs need to wear clothes even indoors due to sensitivity to cold. Experts have identified five breeds that are most likely to freeze in winter.
It is important to remember that the health of our pets should come first, especially during festive periods when more tempting dishes appear. Be attentive to your dogs, adapt your environment for their comfort and safety to avoid troubles.
