Ukraine's Forest Cover Climbs to 19%, Exceeding Reforestation Goals.
State Forest Agency's 2025 Report
According to TSN.ua: In his 2025 report, the head of Ukraine's State Forest Agency, Viktor Smal, announced that the country's forest fund now covers 10.4 million hectares. Of this total, 74% is under the Agency's management. The area of restored forests in 2025 reached 25.9 thousand hectares, surpassing the year's planned targets.
Viktor Smal noted that while the Agency had managed 73% of Ukraine's forests for many years, this figure increased to 74% in 2025, representing a gain of 100 thousand hectares.
“Ukraine's forest fund totals 10.4 million hectares. For many years, 73% of these forests were under the management of the State Forest Agency, but this indicator has now reached 74%, having increased by 100 thousand hectares,” stated Viktor Smal.
Additionally, the area of naturally seeded forests in Ukraine is approximately 2 million hectares. As of 2026, Ukraine's forest cover has reached about 19%, a significant increase from just 10% in 1950. This progress is particularly notable given the environmental pressures faced by the region.
“The actual level of the country's forest cover is currently about 19%,” emphasized the head of the State Forest Agency.
The area of restored forests in 2025 hit 25.9 thousand hectares, which is 106.2% of the planned volume. “For example, in 2025, the area of restored forests reached 25.9 thousand hectares—this is 106.2% of the annual plan,” said Smal, highlighting successes in this area.
These figures underscore Ukraine's efforts under the President's "Green Country" Program and the work of the state enterprise "Forests of Ukraine," which promotes the conservation and restoration of the nation's forest resources.
The growth in forest area under the Agency's management, coupled with exceeding reforestation plans, signals an intensification of state efforts to protect and renew forest resources. Raising the country's forest cover to 19% marks a crucial step in preserving ecological balance and combating climate change. These developments may positively influence Ukraine's international standing, especially within the context of environmental policy and sustainable development.
